Personally, I find it interesting
that as the 1950's progressed, nearly all radio designs
moved towards the use of printed circuits and low-current
valves. This makes good sense as it reduces cost and
makes optimum use of widely availiable components. However, what I cannot understand is why these manufacturers felt it necessary to homogenise their product's appearance too. The use of the rexine-covered suitcase design became so widespread that radios were almost indistinguishable - apart from some notable exceptions. Given the shift in the marketing attempt towards younger women and the emerging 'teens' this is hard to understand - unless the decision makers really could not read the market desires at all well.
